Herbie Hancock - Toys
According to Herbie, Speak Like A Child, was written as an extension of Maiden Voyage, given the use of simple melodies that could be easily put to voice and the attention it gives to the sounds and colors of chords instead of their harmonic complexity. The albums various themes, as he explains, center on the idea of regaining childlike wonder, purity, spontaneity, and hope in the possibility of a brighter future. In this way, Herbie’s harmonic revolution begun in Maiden Voyage and Empyrean Isles becomes counter-revolutionary when compared the work of his contemporaries like Charles Mingus or Miles Davis, who composed riotous referendums on the racism and legal segregation of the period.
